From a struggling 14-year-old boy in the United States, he has risen to become a dedicated leader, committed to building a safe and strong community.

The Journey to Success in a Foreign Country
Alongside a career spanning more than 20 years in the aerospace industry and running his own business, Charlie Nguyen (Nguyen Manh Chi) - Mayor of the City of Westminster, has quietly devoted more than 35 years to the life and well-being of his community. Yet every story of success is often shaped by challenging first steps. For Mayor Charlie Nguyen, beginning his journey toward self-reliance in the United States at the age of 14 was a defining milestone, one that helped shape the resilience, character and sense of responsibility that would come to define him in the years that followed.
At 62, looking back on the journey he has traveled, he still vividly remembers the teenager he once was - a young Charlie Nguyen who had to fend for himself while pursuing his education. Step by step, he rose above his circumstances, earned his engineering degree, built a career and eventually sponsored his family to immigrate to the United States. This very experience provided him with a solid foundation to continue pursuing his goal of serving the community out of a deep sense of gratitude to life. That experience became a strong foundation for his continued commitment to serving the community, guided by a deep sense of gratitude for life.

In the early years of his journey, Charlie Nguyen took on an active role in organizing and advising the Vietnamese Youth Convention (VYC), an international event that brought together thousands of young people from around the world at major universities, including UC Irvine, UCLA, and California State University, Long Beach. At the same time, he actively participated in disaster-relief efforts, including support for tsunami victims, victims of the September 11 attacks and fundraising efforts to build refugee villages. Charlie believes that, “Since I’m fortunate enough to have more opportunities in life than many others, I have a responsibility to contribute to making society a better place.
Life Philosophy Shaped by Years of Community Service
His years of dedication earned Charlie Nguyen the trust of the community and encouragement to enter public service. His political career began in 2016, when he served as a Director of the Midway Sanitation District, followed by his election to the City Council in 2018 and later his appointment as Vice Mayor of Westminster. In 2022, Charlie Nguyen officially earned the support of voters and was elected Mayor of Westminster. Recalling the moment he was elected mayor, Charlie Nguyen remains deeply moved by the affection and support he received from the community - an enduring source of motivation that reminds him of his responsibility to uphold fairness.

Behind the mayoral title is a deeply humble Charlie Nguyen. To him, a position of authority is not an end in itself, but a bridge to turning his ideals of service into action and serving the people more effectively.
Asked about the legacy he wants to leave in the hearts of the community, Mr. Charlie Nguyen expressed: “At the conclusion of my term, when I return to family life, I only wish to be seen as a regular citizen. Even without an official title, I will still give back to society in the capacity of an ordinary resident. While this is not my birthplace, America is my second homeland that raised me into who I am today. My hope is for other ethnic communities to always look upon the Vietnamese people with genuine respect”.

That is also why Charlie Nguyen has decided to seek re-election as Mayor of Westminster for the 2026 - 2030 term. For him, as long as he has the health and ability to serve, he will continue to dedicate himself to the community, leaving no room for regret over aspirations left unfinished. Looking ahead, his journey remains guided by two overarching goals: to make Westminster an increasingly safe and prosperous city, while strengthening the Vietnamese community in particular and the Westminster community as a whole, building communities that are strong, connected and proud.
