(TAP) - On July 29, the Police Investigation Agency of Tay Ninh Provincial Police (Vietnam) announced that it is expanding its investigation into a case of impersonating a group of knights to rescue victims who had been trafficked to Cambodia to seize money from the victim's family. Specifically, according to the Tay Ninh Provincial Police Portal, the leader of the fraud group is Nguyen Minh Sang (born in 1989, residing in Long Trung Quarter, Hoa Thanh Ward, Tay Ninh Province). Since September 2024, Nguyen Minh Sang has rented a room at Khanh Vy Hotel (alley 45, Pham Hung Street, Long Chi Quarter, Long Thanh Trung Ward, Hoa Thanh Town, former Tay Ninh Province) to establish a group called “Minh Sang Knights”. He created a Facebook account named “International Anti-Human Trafficking Team (Minh Sang Knights)” with phone numbers 0382.430.589 and 0334.086.392; posted articles and videos about rescuing victims who had been tricked to Cambodia and neighboring countries.

Sang claimed to be the "Team Leader", proactively contacted the families of victims who were trafficked to Cambodia; pretended to collect information about the person who needed to be rescued such as: pictures, phone numbers, current location, etc. Then, the subject asked the victim's family to pay a fee of 70 to 500 million VND for each "rescue". Using this trick, at least one couple (Mr. S. and Mrs. D.) were scammed out of 430 million VND. According to TAP News, the Facebook page of the scam group, although it had changed its unrelated profile picture, the posts containing fake information about the rescue were still there.

In order to serve the investigation and expand the case, the Investigation Police Agency of Tay Ninh Provincial Police calls on people who have been victims of the subject to contact and cooperate in the investigation at: Address: Criminal Police Department, No. 1229 Cach Mang Thang Tam Street, Hiep Nghia Quarter, Tan Ninh Ward, Tay Ninh; or directly contact Investigator Doan Phong Duy (Phone number: 0931.295.279).

Following this incident, everyone, especially families whose relatives have been trafficked to Cambodia, should take note of the following points:

  • Always verify information: Do not blindly trust organizations or individuals who claim to be "knights" or "volunteers". Immediately contact the local police, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs or the Vietnamese Embassy in Cambodia to verify the authenticity.

  • Be careful with social media accounts: Do not provide personal information or transfer money to unknown accounts. Be especially alert of urgent requests for money transfers in any form.

  • Do not rush to transfer money: Scammers often put time pressure on you ("It's urgent, pay now or you'll miss out!"). At this point, stay calm and contact the authorities before making any financial decisions.

  • Do not be agitated by fake images and videos: Many people send clips and photos of tortured victims to cause panic. Ask them to provide specific evidence (documents, clear location) or ask the authorities to verify and clarify.
